 ElectroTHERAPY

Electrotherapy is an extension of my Dry Needling Service.  It involves using a TENS machine (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) attached to the needles to gain additional benefits from your treatment.  Research indicates that electro dry needling is more effective than standard dry needling alone.  It works by further capitalising on the stimulation of the nervous system and relates to Pain Gate Theory.  It allows more blood flow and provides analgesia to numb the pain and create a longer-term effect.  Key benefits include:

  • Increase in joint mobility

  • Benefits both acute and chronic conditions

  • Reduction in muscular tension

  • Elimination of trigger points

I offer electrotherapy in-clinic using two different devices - the main one is the TENS machine which involves a more prolonged exposure.  Alternatively, if time is limited or a client just wants a quick taste of what it involves, I will often use the 'acu-pen', which is a more simplified version.  Both machines are pictured below.

How does this differ to the TENS machine I've used at home?

Good question - this therapy works in the same sort of way.  However the key difference is that a conventional TENS machine uses pads that are placed over the skin.  Whilst stimulation of the muscle does still occur, its effects are fairly superficial as the skin creates an insulating barrier.  In contrast, the needles are already inserted directly into the muscle, and the charge is passed straight through the metal of the needle, which more effectively targets deeper structures for increased benefit.

What does it feel like?

You can expect to feel a buzzing or tapping sensation.  Depending upon the area, you may also experience involuntary twitching movement from the muscles.  This is perfectly normal, as muscle movement takes place from electrical signals coming from the brain, except in this case these signals are from an external device.

*Please note - the TENS machine is an in-clinic service only, it cannot be offered through mobile appointments.
